November 1998

I bought the car new from Culver Motors Ltd (now Ryburn) in Newport Gwent. There were several delays in getting the car to me - one included an explosion in the Toyota factory in Kyoto Japan! - not an auspicious start.

The car I ordered was Lucerne Silver and had black bumpers and rubbing strips but Toyota changed the spec before it was delivered and the one I got came with those parts colour coded - at the time I wasn't sure that I liked the change but these things grow on you. The interior was similar to the G6 with the trim done in Shadow fabric and the plastic bits in dark grey (so much better than the anaemic light grey of the other Corollas).  Other changes from the standard Corolla include 14" Wolfrace Racelite alloys,  air conditioning and electric sunroof, CD / RDS tuner, sports style front seats, chrome plated 'punched hole' front grille, and metallic paint.  I also got 2 years free servicing as part of the deal.

I would have liked all of this except for the white wheels (not very good on a metallic silver car!) but the dealer said that it had to be bought complete and they could not split the kit.  I wasn't about to shell out £1410 (plus painting and fitting) for a complete kit that included parts that I didn't want. With this in mind I decided to choose the alternative front skirt and fog lamps and had them fitted before delivery.

The dealer had a basic 1300 Corolla fitted out with this kit and I noticed that the spoilers were badged TTE. I found their website and emailed them asking if they could sell me parts direct or at least tell me who made the individual components and where I could get them. They told me that the springs were made by Eibach, the back box by Remus and the spoilers by themselves. Now I had something to go on but a lack of cash kept me from going any further at the time though I did replace the standard gear knob with a Racing 'Brio' from Specialist Car Parts in Cardiff.  Finished in carbon look and grey leather it nicely complimented the Corolla's interior.
